At the Trump White House, the exit interview is where the president discovers what the job involves.
Axios reported October 16 that Katie Zacharia was out after five days as press secretary. The Guardian also reported the departure, citing a White House official. AP reported that Trump had suggested she reconsider the role and complained about her treatment by the press.
Translation: the appointment was an excellent decision until the appointee encountered the position.
A normal hiring process asks whether somebody can handle the job before handing over the microphone. This administration has pioneered the live audition, in which the applicant gets the title, the public supplies the questions and the president reviews his own selection as though he found it in a neighbor’s yard.
The press secretary is supposed to explain presidential decisions. This one has become an example. Conveniently, the person who made the appointment is still available to comment on how disappointing it turned out to be.
For the next vacancy, a suggested interview question — parody, not an actual White House form:
Please describe a time you made a bad hiring decision. The president may answer first.
